Tree Pruning & Small Tree Removal

People look for a tree surgeon; this is the work we do day to day: pruning, crown reduction, shaping and small tree removal. A well-pruned tree looks better, stays healthier and causes fewer problems. Bad pruning does real damage. We make clean cuts in the right place at the right time of year, so the tree heals properly instead of throwing up weak regrowth or letting rot in. No topping, no hacking it flat.

We handle crown reduction, crown thinning, crown lifting and general reshaping, along with fruit tree pruning and the removal of smaller trees that have outgrown their spot. Overgrown conifers, trees blocking light, overhanging branches across the shed roof or into next door’s garden: it’s all bread-and-butter tree cutting for us, and every scrap of waste goes with us when we leave.

Before anything is cut, we check whether the tree is protected by a Tree Preservation Order or sits in a conservation area. If it is, we’ll help you sort the council paperwork first. We’re also honest about scale: we prune and take down small to medium garden trees, but large or hazardous felling close to buildings and power lines is specialist climbing work, and we’ll tell you straight if your job needs it.

How It Works

Free look at the tree

We visit, look at the tree’s condition and position, and talk through what you want: less shade, a smaller crown, or the whole thing gone.

Checks and written quote

We check for TPOs and conservation area rules with the council where needed, then give you a clear written price for the work, so you know the full cost before anyone gets started.

The pruning

Clean cuts back to the right growth points, timed for the season where the job allows, with the shape of the tree kept natural.

Full clear-up

Branches, brash and logs cleared and taken away, lawn raked over, and the garden left as tidy as we found it.

Tree Pruning FAQs

For most deciduous trees it’s late autumn to late winter, while the tree is dormant. There are exceptions. Cherries and plums should be pruned in summer to avoid silver leaf disease, and we avoid disturbing trees with nesting birds. We’ll tell you the right window for your tree when we quote.

Crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller by cutting back to lower growth points, keeping a natural shape. Crown thinning keeps the tree the same size but removes selected branches so more light and wind pass through. Thinning is often the answer when the real problem is shade, not size.

Your local council keeps a register of TPOs, and trees in conservation areas have similar protection. You usually need to give the council six weeks’ notice before working on them. We check this for you before quoting, because unauthorised work on a protected tree can mean a hefty fine.

As a rule of thumb, no more than about a third of the live crown in a single season. Cutting harder than that stresses the tree and triggers a mess of weak, fast regrowth. If a tree needs a big reduction, it’s often better done in stages a year or two apart. We’ll advise on what the tree can take.

We prune and remove small to medium garden trees where they can be brought down safely in sections. Large trees, or anything hazardous near buildings, roads or power lines, needs a specialist tree surgeon with climbing and rigging kit, and we’ll tell you honestly if your job falls into that bracket.
