Landscaping in Astley
Astley sits just east of Leigh along the A580, which puts it about four miles from our base, a ten-minute drive on a good day. It’s an old mining village at heart, and the pit headgear at Astley Green still stands over the Bridgewater Canal as a reminder. These days it’s a popular spot for families and commuters, with the village running straight into Tyldesley to the north and open mossland stretching away to the south.
The gardens reflect that history. There are older cottages and terraces around Astley Green and Higher Green, solid semis from the interwar and post-war years along the main roads, and a steady crop of new-build estates that have gone up over the last couple of decades. Down towards Astley Moss the ground gets low-lying and peaty, which changes how we approach drainage, fence posts and lawns. It’s not the same job as a garden on higher ground.
Astley is one of the closest villages to our Leigh base, and one of the areas we pass through most often. Whether it’s a full garden overhaul on a new estate or keeping an established cottage garden in shape, we treat it as local work, because from Leigh, it is.
