Timber & Composite Decking

Decking earns its place in gardens that paving struggles with. A sloped plot, a step down from the back door, a corner that never drains: a deck floats over all of it on a frame, where a patio would need serious groundworks first. Done well, it adds a warm, level outdoor room that gets used from the first mild weekend in spring to the last dry day of autumn.

The first decision is timber or composite, and we are straight about the trade-off. Treated softwood costs less up front and looks the part, but it wants cleaning and re-oiling to stay that way. Composite decking costs more on day one and then asks almost nothing of you: no splinters, no oiling, and the colour holds. In shaded or tree-covered gardens where timber greens over quickly, composite usually wins the argument on its own.

Whichever boards you choose, the deck is only ever as good as what it sits on. We build subframes properly: posts set on solid pads, joists at the right centres for the board, a membrane underneath to stop weeds, and airflow designed in so the structure stays dry and lasts. Steps, balustrades and handrails are built into the job, not bolted on as an afterthought.

Decking FAQs

It comes down to budget and appetite for upkeep. Treated timber is cheaper to buy and easy to repair, but needs a clean and re-oil every year or two to stay looking good. Composite costs more up front and then more or less looks after itself. In shaded gardens where timber greens over fast, composite is usually worth the extra.

A properly built timber deck on a sound subframe should give you 15 years or more with basic care. Quality composite boards are typically guaranteed for 20 to 25 years. In both cases the subframe matters more than the boards, which is why we never skimp on it.

Yes, and that is where decking beats paving hands down. The frame takes up the slope, so you get a perfectly level surface without moving tonnes of soil. Split-level decks with a step or two between them work well on steeper plots.

Any surface grows algae in a shaded, damp spot. Grooved boards help, composite ranges with textured finishes help more, and an annual wash keeps either surface safe. If the deck is going somewhere that never sees sun, tell us and we will spec the boards accordingly.

Usually not. Decking under 30cm off the ground and covering less than half the garden generally falls under permitted development. Raised decks above that can need permission, and conservation areas have their own rules. We flag it at the quote if your job needs a check.
