Culcheth sits about five miles south of our Leigh base, just over the border into Warrington borough, close enough that a quote visit is a short run down the road, and near enough that we can keep maintenance rounds here as regular as the ones on our own doorstep. It’s one of our favourite places to work: good-sized gardens, mature planting and owners who care about how their outside space looks.
Much of Culcheth grew in the decades after the war, and the gardens show it, generous plots around the detached and semi-detached homes off Common Lane and Warrington Road, with lawns, established hedges and trees that have had sixty years to get big. Add the older cottages and farmhouses out towards Wigshaw and Fowley Common, and the newer estates rising on the village edges, and you get the full spread of garden types in one village.
It’s a proper village too, the green at its heart, the shops along Common Lane, the Linear Park running along the old railway line. People tend to stay put in Culcheth, which suits the way we work: we’d rather build something that lasts and pick up the neighbour’s job next spring than do quick work twice.
