Block Paving for Wigan Gardens

Block paving is the most adaptable surface we lay, and across Wigan it goes down for far more than parking. Out at Worsley Mesnes and Hawkley Hall we use it to run a clean path round the side of a house, edge a lawn or build a set of shallow garden steps that match the drive. The blocks are small enough to curve and cut around beds, so they follow shapes a large flag can’t.

We cover Wigan and the surrounding area: Scholes, Whelley, Swinley, Beech Hill, Worsley Mesnes and beyond (WN1, WN2, WN3, WN6).

What’s Included

The interest is in the bond and the colour blend. Paths and edging suit a stretcher or basketweave laid with a contrasting double-block border, while herringbone is kept for anything a car crosses because it locks tightest under load. We dry-lay a few mixes, buff, brindle, charcoal and silver-grey, smooth or textured, on the ground first, then build the lot over a compacted MOT Type 1 base with concrete edge restraints so nothing creeps.

How It Works

03

04
Tidy handover Waste cleared, the new paving swept and washed down, and a walk-round with you before we call it finished.
★★★★★
"Tim recently replaced our lawn which was getting waterlogged, inserted a drain system and made a step down from our patio to the garden. He was very professional and did a very good job, completing extra work beyond what we originally asked for. We were impressed with his work ethic and he kept us informed of what he was doing throughout. We would definitely recommend Barrow Landscaping."

Block Paving in Wigan, FAQs

Yes, patchy sinking usually means a soft spot in the base rather than a fault with the blocks. We lift the affected area, rebuild and recompact the sub-base, then relay the same blocks and brush fresh kiln-dried sand into the joints so the surface reads as one again.

Yes, a double-block course or a soldier edge is one of the tidiest ways to frame a lawn, a gravel path or a flagged patio. Set on a concrete haunch it also holds the neighbouring surface in place, so it earns its keep as well as looking sharp.

Herringbone laid at forty-five degrees interlocks so the blocks brace against each other under turning and braking, which is why we use it on driveways. Stretcher bond and basketweave are a little less load-tolerant but look great on paths and patios where there’s no vehicle weight. All of them need a proper edge restraint to stop the blocks creeping, whatever the pattern.

Yes, and it suits patios well because the small units follow curves and let us work borders, banding and even a circle feature into the design. We lay it to a fall the same way we would flags, so water runs off rather than pooling, and the colour blend can be picked to sit with the house and the planting.

It depends on the area, the access and what we find when we dig, because the excavation and sub-base are a fair chunk of the price whatever blocks go on top. We price per job rather than a blanket rate per square metre, so you get an exact written figure after a free site visit before anything starts.
